Dubbed the ‘Edinburgh of the South’ thanks to its early Scottish settlement, Dunedin is today a vibrant city with attractions extending way beyond its past.
For accommodation in the heart of the city look no further than the Scenic Hotel Southern Cross, itself something of an historic landmark with a history dating back to 1883, or the Scenic Hotel Dunedin City, a newer hotel featuring spacious, modern guest rooms. Both are within easy walking distance of the Octagon, the centre point of the city, with shopping, entertainment, the central business district, Otago University and the railway station close at hand.
For sights just a little farther a field make sure your itinerary includes visits to the Royal Albatross colony, Port Chalmers and the Taieri Plains.
