It was a favourite haunt of Sir Edmund Hillary, conqueror of Mt Everest, and today draws people from all around the world to see its World Heritage Area sights. The biggest draw card is undoubtedly the 13 kilometre Fox Glacier which has the prestige of being one of the most easily accessed glaciers in the world and is also in the unusual position of advancing rather than retreating.
It is possible to view the icy giant on foot or by air and when that adventure is done there is a wealth of bush walking, wildlife watching, hunting, fishing and beach exploration to choose from. For a warm hotel welcome look no further than the conveniently located Heartland Hotel Glacier Country or the Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier.
