Franz Josef, a tiny settlement on New Zealand’s rugged West Coast, has a reputation belying its size all thanks to its famous neighbour, the Franz Josef Glacier. The glacier plunges 12 kilometres from great heights in the Southern Alps to its terminal face just 19 kilometres from the sea. It is one of the most easily accessed glaciers in the world and can be viewed by all ages and abilities on foot or from the air.
The surrounding South West World Heritage Area offers all manner of other outdoor pursuits and adventure activities amidst its pristine natural environment. Franz Josef has a range of accommodation including the high quality Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier or the luxurious Te Waonui Forest Retreat, an eco designed building nestled in the native rain forest.
