With a landscape stretching from the coast, through lush rainforest and up to the mountain tops, it is not surprising that the south west area of New Zealand has been exalted to World Heritage Area status. Sitting right on the doorstep, is Franz Josef, the settlement closest to its namesake, the famous Franz Josef Glacier. From the village the glacier is within easy reach and can be viewed either on foot or from a height in a variety of scenic flights. It is also the ideal base for all the other outdoor activities that abound in this natural wonderland.
Hotels in the village include the Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier with its own brand of West Coast hospitality, or for something extra special, Te Waonui Forest Retreat, an eco-designed hotel set in the native rainforest.
