Way back in 1642, Abel Tasman commented on the lofty peaks he spotted in the South Westland area of New Zealand making these quite probably the first European sighting of the country. Today those peaks are part of the Te Wahipounamu South West New Zealand World Heritage Area, a region bestowed with an extraordinary bounty of mountains, glaciers, rivers, rugged coastline, lush vegetation and wildlife.
To make the most of a visit to the region there is a good choice of hotel accommodation in key destinations along the way. Look for the architecture award winning, eco-friendly five star Te Waonui Forest Retreat in Franz Josef; the Scenic Hotel Franz Josef Glacier; the Heartland Hotel Fox Glacier; the Heartland Hotel Glacier Country, also in Fox Glacier and the Heartland World Heritage Hotel in Haast.
