Supporting Communities And The Environment In The ‘Top Of The South’

Scenic Hotel Marlborough is gateway to ‘wine country’ and many of the country’s most sought after nature-based experiences. Caring for the environment and local communities is at the heart of Scenic Hotel Marlborough’s business, which is exemplified by a number of hotel wide initiatives and support of many and varied community organisations and local charities.

As part of a proudly New Zealand owned and operated hotel group, Scenic Hotel Marlborough demonstrates its commitment to sustainable business practices and encourages guests to participate through the following programmes:

  • Waste recycling and waste reduction including food waste and cooking oil.
  • Energy conservation measures throughout the hotel.
  • NZ made toiletries in recyclable paper ‘take home’ bags.
  • Supporting ‘NZ Made’, buying local and using local tradespeople where possible.
  • Sustainable suppliers programme.
  • Guest linen reuse programme.
  • Staff training in sustainable hospitality environments.
  • Charitable support of the following organisations and programmes either through fundraising activities, room donations or discounted rates:
    • Child Cancer Foundation.
    • Local schools, colleges and playgroups.
    • Local Hospice.
    • Marlborough Chamber of Commerce.
    • Lions Club.
    • Garden Marlborough.
    • Marlborough A&P Show.
  • Recycling bins in guest rooms.
  • Book recycling programme by way of guest lending library / exchange.
  • Wine bottle lids collected and donated to the local Lions Club.
  • A collection point for old and unwanted mobile phones – these are donated to nearby Riverlands School which is part of a recycling rewards scheme, having already “earned” an AED and now working towards computer equipment.
  • As part of the Oral Care Recycling Programme, discarded tooth brushes and tubes are collected by the hotel’s housekeeping team and sent back to Colgate: once received the oral waste is cleaned and melted into hard plastic that can be remolded to make new recycled products.
  • Since 2018, Scenic Hotel Marlborough has proudly donated to the Kaipupu Wildlife Sanctuary which is a community project aiming to restore a 40 hectare 'mainland island' in Picton harbour. The bush clad hills are home to many of New Zealand’s unique native wildlife including tui, korimako (bellbird), piwakawaka (fantail), kereru (NZ woodpigeon), korora (little penguin), tui, weta, raukawa gecko and waiharakeke grass skink. The team at Scenic Hotel Marlborough sell tui ‘soft-toy’ birds, notebooks and Christmas baubles: all the profits are donated to the Sanctuary to continue their amazing work.

Scenic Hotel Marlborough supports sustainable living and actively encourages guests to participate in simple but highly effective hotel initiatives to help keep New Zealand Green and uphold the hotel’s Qualmark Enviro Silver Award status. This Government initiative is New Zealand tourism’s official quality assurance programme and provides an operational benchmark for the tourism industry as well as guests.

As a guest of Scenic Hotel Marlborough you will not only enjoy genuine Kiwi hospitality in the South but also make a difference to local communities, not for profit charities and the wider environment by simply staying the night.
