8 Must Do Things in Blenheim

Located 27km south of Picton in the north east of the South Island, Blenheim is the centre of the Marlborough region, one of the sunniest places in the country and an ideal base to follow the Marlborough Wine Trail. Enjoy gourmet food, visit historical attractions, check out exciting sights and experience amazing adventure activities.

Wither Hills Farm Park: With over 1100 hectares of rolling to steep hill country, the Farm Park is enjoyed by thousands of locals and visitors each year with over 60 km of walking tracks and mountain bike trails on offer. The tracks are suitable for a range of fitness levels and durations ranging from about 20 minutes up to several hours.

Omaka Aviation Heritage Centre: Located near Blenheim Airport is one of the world’s largest private collections of military aircraft from both World Wars, realistically displayed and created by the magic of Weta Workshop and WingNut Films. Allow at least two hours, preferably three. If you're feeling bold, you can put on flying helmets and squeeze into the front seats of a vintage biplane for a 10-minute joyride over the surrounding wine country.

Winery Tours: Marlborough is New Zealand’s premier wine growing region with most wineries scattered around the Blenheim/Renwick area. With more than 30 wineries offering tastings in the region, the best way to explore the wine trails is to jump on a winery tour. Ride the trail by bike, book a scheduled minivan or take a private car – all can be done independently or guided.

Queen Charlotte Track: Regarded as one of New Zealand’s classic hikes, the Queen Charlotte offers a spectacular journey by foot or bike from Ship Cove to Anakiwa. Discover historic bays, skyline ridges and unsurpassed views of the stunning Marlborough Sounds. The 70km track takes four days and has multiple accommodation options including luxury water's edge resorts, lodges, holiday houses, backpackers and campsites.

Marlborough Museum: The history of NZ's wine industry is celebrated here, along with fascinating displays devoted to finds from Wairau Bar, the site of the country's earliest known settlement. Look out for the karetao, a traditional wooden puppet covered in moko (tattoos) and designed to perform a haka (ceremonial dance). The museum is situated within the Bradshaw Heritage Park, a collection of transported Victorian buildings that includes a miniature railway and a farm-machinery museum.

Marlborough Sounds: The Marlborough Sounds are made up of four distinctly different Sounds - Queen Charlotte, Kenepuru, Pelorus, and Mahau. The winding waterways make for brilliant boating, fishing, diving and wildlife viewing including dolphin watching. Join a guided tour aboard a cruise, charter or bring your own boat or kayak. To get there, head north and head for Picton, a quick 25 minute drive from Blenheim.

Seymour Square: Only two minutes’ walk from Blenheim's town centre, Seymour Square, is a picturesque with carefully tended floral gardens, a 16.5 m high historic stone clock tower built in 1928 to remember those who died in World War 1, and a memorial fountain, which offers a spectacular multi-coloured display at night. Whether picnicking, strolling or taking time out, Seymour Square offers an ideal setting.

Moa Brewing Company: Like craft beer? Founded in 2003 by Josh Scott and situated among the vineyards in the world famous wine making region of Marlborough. Nestled among the vines in a tranquil setting with a deck and bean bags so you can relax and catch the sun, Moa is the perfect spot to visit if wine just isn’t your thing. They offer informative tastings about the Moa range, and a wide selection of tap beers are available.
