Here are some useful tips for your next Tongan adventure.

Money

Tonga has it's own currency - Pa'anga and is available in standard denominations. Most credit cards are accepted and there are over 200 EFTPOS outlets, however it is recommended to carry cash as a lot of cafes, shops, guest houses only accept cash.

Travel Insurance

We strongly recommend purchasing travel insurance before travelling to Tonga. Included vehicle insurance is wise if you intend to hire a vehicle.

Internet

Wifi is available in most accommodation providers in Tonga. There are also internet cafes cropping up available to locals and tourists. Scenic Hotel Tonga offers wireless internet throughout public and conference areas:

  • First 60 minutes is complimentary daily (up to 100mb)
  • After 60 minutes - TOP$10 for 100mb over 24 hours or TOP$20 for 200mb over 24 hours

Food

If you are staying at self contained accommodation you may wish to bring some food with you. Be sure to check which food items are not allowed to be brought in through customs. There are a range of small grocery stores (think provincial Four Square in NZ) where you can purchase most items.

Clothing

Year round it is worth bringing a light raincoat, and wearing loose light clothing is recommended as the climate is very warm and can be very humid. Walking shows, reef shoes and sun hats are vital too!

Activities

It is strongly recommended that you pre book any fishing, diving, snorkelling or whale watching trips before arriving in Tonga as these book out especially during peak seasons. Other tours and activities can be booked on arrival. You can hire snorkelling gear on the island, though it is limited so if you have the space you may choose to bring your own.

Markets

The local markets are located in towns on the main island groups and you will find handcrafted items and fresh produce.

Personal items

We advise bringing sun hats and sun block, and insect repellent any pharmacy medications. It may be difficult to arrange for the correct medication if you are on the outer island groups.
