The centre has partnered with the Department of Conservation and is home to an incubation and hatching programme for Kiwi’s which are extremely vulnerable to introduced predators (cats, stoats, dogs etc). Once the Kiwi are of a sufficient size they are reintroduced to the wild. You’ll also be able to get up close to the incredible Tuatara – New Zealand’s only ancient reptile. They can live for over 100 years and can grow up to 80cm (2 feet in length). The newest attraction to the centre is the Kororā (Little Blue Penguins) sanctuary. Built as a temporary home for injured penguins you’ll be able to see these delightful creatures as they swim and dive in a glass fronted pool. The wildlife centre is open 7 days a week inc. public holidays.
