As summer’s heat fades, autumn presents the perfect season to explore the scenic West Coast region of Haast on foot. From the shores of sparkling blue waters to dense mountainous rainforests, Haast is dotted with stunning walking tracks to suit explorers of all abilities and preferences.

Whether you’re in the mood for a light walk to a lookout with magnificent views or you’ve laced up your hiking boots for hours of hiking through the terrain, below are just a few of the most scenic walks Haast has to offer.

Understanding the landscape

Haast is a stunning region on New Zealand’s West Coast, known for its postcard-worthy landscapes and exquisite natural beauty. Characterised by rugged coastlines, dense temperate rainforests, and majestic river valleys, the region is an absolute paradise for outdoor enthusiasts.

At the heart of it all lies Haast Pass, a breathtaking alpine route that connects the West Coast to the Southern Lakes region. This pass serves as a gateway to numerous scenic walks and hiking trails, offering unique experiences from gentle boardwalks to challenging alpine treks.

The varied terrain promises hikers an unforgettable journey through glacial-fed rivers, pristine beaches, and untouched wilderness.

Shorter trails 

Roaring Billy Falls

  • Distance: 1.4 km  
  • Difficulty: Easy 
  • Time: 20 minutes 

Take a gentle stroll through lush beech forest to the mesmerising Roaring Billy Falls. This easily accessible walk is perfect for families and nature lovers eager to witness the powerful cascade of water plunging into the vibrant Haast River. Keep an eye out for local birdlife and soak up the tranquil surroundings.   

Located just a short 20 minute drive from Haast township on State Highway 6 (or 1 hour 40 minutes from Wanaka), this stunning cascade is well worth making a stop for. 

Thunder Creek Falls (Haast Pass)

  • Distance: 200m 
  • Difficulty: Easy 
  • Time: 5 minutes return 

Another State Highway 6 favourite is Thunder Creek Falls, located 40 minutes drive from Haast (or 1 hour 20 minutes from Wanaka) a stunning 28-meter waterfall that cascades dramatically into the Haast River. 

It only takes a short walk to bring you to the awe-inspiring falls. Ideal for a quick stop along the Haast Pass highway, this easy track provides magnificent photo opportunities and a taste of the region’s raw beauty. 

Ship Creek Walks

  • Distance: Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk – 800m; Dune Lake Walk – 1km loop
  • Difficulty: Easy 
  • Time: Kahikatea Swamp Forest Walk – 20 minutes; Dune Lake Walk – 30 minutes

Experience the picture-perfect coast of Ship Creek with your pick of two short yet beautiful tracks. Follow the sandy Dune Lake trail for views of the ocean, mountains, and dune lake, or take the boardwalk through the Kahikatea Swamp Forest to marvel at one of the country’s last remaining stands of Kahikatea trees.  

You can find Ship Creek just 17 kilometres north of Haast. Car parking and public toilets can be found just off State Highway 6 (on the left-hand side heading North). 

Blue Pools Walk (Haast Pass)

  • Distance: 3km return
  • Difficulty: Medium 
  • Time: 1 hour return

Venture into a world of natural beauty on the Blue Pools Walk, where enchanting beech and podocarp forests lead you to the translucent waters of the Makarora River. A series of swing bridges adds a hint of adventure as you reach the iconic Blue Pools. Perfect for a family day out or a photographer’s dream, the walk offers an impressive display of nature year-round.  

Located halfway between Haast and Wanaka, the Blue Pools can be found just off State Highway 6. 

Monro Beach Walk

  • Distance: 5.1km return
  • Difficulty: Medium 
  • Time: 1 hour return

Follow the path meandering through lush native forest, past fur seals with a chance of seeing the rare Fiordland Crested Penguins (Tawaki), until you reach the secluded and picturesque Monro Beach. This track is perfect for those seeking a peaceful yet engaging walk, where the forest meets the coast, offering spectacular views and the chance for unique wildlife encounters. The trail is generally well maintained but there may be patches of mud so have a spare pair of shoes ready back at your car. 

Monro Beach can be found 30 minutes drive north of Haast with parking available on the left hand side of State Highway 6 just after Moeraki River Bridge. Public toilets are also available here. 

Longer Trails

Smoothwater Bay Track

  • Distance: 9.4km return
  • Difficulty: Medium to Hard
  • Time: 3-4 hours

A diverse array of landscapes await along the Smoothwater Bay Track. This out and back trail leads you through dense native forest from Jackson Bay, across streams, and eventually to the secluded Smoothwater Bay, where the captivating coastal scenery unfolds. Ideal for those seeking solitude and a taste of the West Coast’s raw beauty, you can find this trail about 35 minutes drive south of Haast (follow Jackson Bay Road). You’ll need good hiking equipment as the track can be muddy and the weather changeable. Reward yourself with a succulent seafood experience at the famous ‘Craypot’ restaurant in Jackson Bay after your walk. 

Brewster Track to Brewster Hut 

  • Distance: 5km return
  • Difficulty: Hard / Advanced
  • Time: 6-8 hours return

A rewarding challenge for experienced hikers, the Brewster Track in Mt Aspiring National Park offers a steep, invigorating climb through alpine terrain to Brewster Hut. The best time to do this trail is December through April. Crossing over the Haast River (unbridged), this out-and-back trail passes the beautiful Fantail Falls and ascends steeply, providing breath-taking views over the Southern Alps. This trek is perfect for more experience hikers who appreciate mountainous landscapes and challenging walks (it might be a short walk but your legs are going to feel the nearly 1000 metre elevation gain).  

You can find the start of the track just over an hour from Haast off State Highway 6 (about halfway between Haast and Wanaka). Look for signage for Fantail Falls.
