Scenic Hotel Group Joins Global Ocean Conservation Programme
Scenic Hotel Group has joined Niue’s Ocean Conservation Commitments programme becoming the first hotel chain in the world to do so.
Scenic Hotel Group is a New Zealand owned and operated hotel chain with a four-star resort, Scenic Matavai Resort Niue, as well as than a dozen self-catering units and apartments, in Niue.
It was awarded entry to the programme by Niue’s Minister of Natural Resources during a dinner hosted by Scenic Hotel Group, while on their week-long visit to New Zealand for the Niue Ocean Wide Learning Exchange Tour.
The tour saw more than 40 Niue government and resource management representatives meet New Zealand counterparts involved in marine conservation, climate resilience and sustainable ocean governance.
“For Scenic Hotel Group, the connection with Niue runs deep and to have this connection recognised with entry to the Ocean Conservation Commitments programme is an honour,” says chief executive Karl Luxon.
“Our waterfront property, Scenic Matavai Resort Niue, in the heart of Niue has long been a cornerstone of Niue’s visitor economy, while joining Niue’s Ocean Conservation Commitments programme builds on our broader commitment to responsible tourism and environmental stewardship in the Pacific.”
Scenic Matavai Resort Niue general manager James Shilton attended the opening of the Niue Ocean Wide Learning Exchange Tour at Scenic Hotel Group’s Legacy Airedale Hotel in March.
“It was a great opportunity to come together and build a shared sense of purpose, recognising the protection of the world’s oceans is not the responsibility of small nations alone, but a collective global effort,” he says.
“At Scenic Matavai Resort Niue, ocean conservation is a long-term commitment, so it’s great to be part of Niue’s Ocean Conservation Commitments programme, adding it to our ongoing commitment to low-impact operations, local employment, community partnerships and active support of Niue’s environmental leadership.”
For example, says Shilton, the resort frequently serves as a regional hub, hosting global and Pacific-focused forums and conferences, including the Pacific Fisheries Forum, and is scheduled to host pre-COP31 meetings later this year.

About the Ocean Conservation Commitments programme
Niue’s Ocean Conservation Commitments programme was formally launched at UN Climate Week in New York in 2023. Set up to protect a square kilometre of the country’s ocean for 20 years and further Niue’s broader climate resilience and environmental goals, the global initiative enables individuals and organisations to join as sponsors for a one off contribution of $NZ250.00. Programme sponsors include the United Kingdom’s King Charles and the Bezos Earth Fund, which, to date has contributed US$4 million (NZ$7 million) to the programme.
