Scenic Hotel Marlborough Recognised in Top 20
Scenic Hotel Marlborough has been named in the Tripadvisor 2017 Travellers’ Choice Awards as being one of New Zealand’s Top 20 hotels.
Scenic Hotel Marlborough General Manager, Carmel Horsley says, “in addition to thanking our loyal and happy guests for their generous and consistent reviews, I am also extremely proud of our team who really strive to deliver a truly authentic kiwi hospitality experience that showcases the very best of our unique region.”
Carmel notes the hallmarks of Travellers’ Choice hotels winners are remarkable service, value and quality. We would like to think that we can also add to that a great dining experience that showcases the exceptional fresh local produce from both the land and the sea.
With the recent return of chef Doug Powell to the position of head chef, Scenic Hotel Marlborough’s Savvy Restaurant (formerly known as Mondrian’s Restaurant) now boasts a revitalized menu that is a showcase of the region’s freshest local produce.
Doug says being a local chef in the Marlborough region is an enviable position to be in with some items being so artisan that they are hard to find outside of the region. Amongst his favourites are Omega clams and local black garlic or ‘garlic noir’ that is produced in a fermented style to give a sweetness that works well with the menu’s Beef Carpaccio. Other regional specialties include Marlborough Regal King Salmon, Green Lipped Mussels, game Venison, game lamb from Arapara Island and market fish from nearby Nelson.
In addition to the fresh flavours that the Marlborough region is renowned for, Doug picks a wide selection of gourmet herbs from the hotel’s kitchen garden to add flavour to what he describes as Classic French cuisine with a local twist.
The Marlborough region is also world renowned for its wine industry and in particular it’s Sauvignon Blancs. With a year working with one of the leading lights in the industry, Doug has brought his wine experience and training to Scenic Hotel Marlborough to incorporate into his dishes and is also working on wine pairings to give guests the very best of both the food and wine worlds.
General Manager Carmel says the ongoing development of the hotel’s offering both in terms of a hospitality experience and with the addition of great food and wine is generating very positive feedback from guests both directly and through channels such as TripAdvisor.
