The competition is fierce… the scales are ready…. Who is going to claim the glory of the biggest pumpkin this year??
The Little River Pumpkin Festival has been a key date on calendar since the 1990’s for the Little River community, and Scenic Hotel Group is pleased to be getting in behind this iconic event for 2024! The festival itself is a great family friendly day out, with music, food, games, stalls and competitions but the real drawcard is the coveted Biggest Pumpkin competition – a fierce (but friendly!) competition with a myriad of categories from biggest to smallest, ugliest to most perfect. There is an option for everyone!
We are all about supporting local, whether it be showcasing a local recipe throughout out properties, sponsoring local charities, or simply getting on board and participating in local events ourselves. The Little River Pumpkin Festival epitomises that great kiwi can do attitude, able to have a good laugh amongst friends, and celebrate family and friends together.
Food. Flavour. Joy. These are the three key reasons that Raveen is so passionate about being a chef and why we asked Raveen to create this months Home Grown specials. He loves to see how happy food can make people, and how it brings them together to experience quality products and incredible favour.
Originally from Sri Lanka, Raveen has been part of the Scenic Hotel Cotswold team for over 10 years, and truly loves being a chef, designing food and cooking — the ability to try new flavours, old favourites and fusion between cultures.
Provenance Lambs are raised on living soils, on farms that work with the natural rhythms of nature and the biological processes of the land. They feed and nurture the soil so that soil life returns in turn, it produces more nutritious pasture with less need for chemical intervention.
Provenance has been built from the hard work and perseverance of the Crutchley family, on the majestic Shortland Station in high country Otago. After working the land for years with traditional farming practices and getting less and less return, they shifted their mindsets and direction, choosing to farm in a way that brought the land back to life, working alongside nature, not in spite of it.
We are proud to showcase this innovative New Zealand company, who are representing New Zealand lamb and sustainable ethical farming practices on the world stage.
Our dishes this season have been designed by Marcel Ryda, our executive chef at Scenic Hotel Dunedin City. Marcel has been part of the Scenic team for 4 years, moving to Dunedin 6 years ago from the Coromandel Peninsula where he was Executive Chef at a 4 star resort. He has been a chef most of his life, working in hospitality both here in New Zealand, and in the Netherlands, where he was originally from.
When not being a world class chef, Marcel’s favourite passion is fly-fishing, exploring the great kiwi wilderness rivers in search for those elusive trophy trout.
Enjoy 0% Alcohol with 100% flavour this summer, with the delicious Giesen 0% range of wines. Giesen Wines are New Zealand through and through, and the three Giesen brothers, Theo, Alex and Marcel have dedicated their lives to working collectively for the great good.
Made from our premium full strength wines, Giesen 0% keeps all the best qualities of Giesen Estate.
It’s aromatically expressive, with the varietal characteristics you know and love… only with the alcohol gently removed.
New Zealand is the premier producer of venison worldwide. When it is cooked correctly it can be one of the tastiest and most tender meats available. But alongside the cooking, how it is raised and farmed is of equal importance.
Our venison – featured previously in a Home Grown dish – has been supplied by The Merchants of Venison located in Tai Tapu, Canterbury. With family-owned farms throughout the South Island, the Merchants of Venison are committed to maintaining a very high standard of animal welfare and sustainable farming – only supplying venison from deer that are farm raised, grass-fed and free from hormones or antibiotics.
Mt Hutt, Canterbury’s only commercial ski field is an incredible operation that has perfected the balance between local, domestic and international tourism. It caters for each of these markets well, earning a well deserved reputation and being voted New Zealand’s best ski resort for the past 8 years in the World Ski Awards. Mt Hutt is also on a sustainability journey, with a commitment to reach carbon zero by 2030, by integrating GPS technology, fuel efficiency, and lower emission vehicles. We appreciate their approach, to share lots of little evolutions alongside the bigger stuff. We know it is going to take all of us to start making these steps, and sharing them together for us as a larger industry, country and globe to be able make the change.
In August, Mt Hutt are celebrating their 50th birthday… no mean feat for any company, yet alone a seasonal tourism business… so we would like to say “happy birthday!” and also to acknowledge the great work that Mt Hutt are doing in the sustainability space. Climate change has a massive impact on operations such as theirs, so it is great to see them walking the walk to lessen their impact and decarbonise their business.
Matakana Botanicals has partnered with Scenic hotel Group for many years, with their signature Cucumber and Mint scented toiletries. Matakana Botanicals are a small, family run business, operating from a unique eco-farm, and produces a variety of products using local ingredients that have been inspired by New Zealand. They have always had one core focus, that resonates from their beginnings in 1988 to now with an emphasis on creating unique products which not only smell good but are good for you and assist to enhance your wellbeing.
Trocadero Restaurant & Bar, our special restaurant located in Airedale Boutique Suites, features some very special and unique crockery. The talented Tony Sly, based in Raglan on the West Coast of the North Island, has handmade all the pottery dinnerware you will be served with during your meal. Tony has been inspired by the colours of the landscape and sea, incorporating that chalky white sense into his work for Trocadero. Tony’s work is sold all over the world, so we are proud to be able to showcase his work right here at home.
