Life’s a Beach in Dunedin

A charming city on the east coast of the South Island, Dunedin has a strong Scottish heritage, evidenced by its buildings modelled on Edinburgh’s architecture. The vibrant student city has an endless supply of sights to see – everything from beautiful beaches and buildings to the world’s steepest street.

White Sands of St Kilda Beach and St Clair Beach

Laying claim to the most consistent surf in New Zealand, St Clair Beach runs along the Dunedin coast and into St Kilda Beach. St Clair has an esplanade where you can sit with an ice cream or coffee, breath in the fresh salt air and scope the surfing scene going off below you. Shift your gaze to the right and you should be able to see the open-air hot salt water swimming pool.

Otago Farmers Market

Pop along to the Dunedin Railway Station on a Saturday morning to witness the finest selection of locally produced seasonal food. See buskers, cooking demonstrations, and sample some of the delicious healthy food.

Dunedin Railway Station

A prize example of Edwardian architecture, the Dunedin Railway Station looks more like a stately home from outside. Look at the attention to detail that has been paid to the tiled arches and stained glass windows illustrating locomotives. The ANZAC Square venue was finished in 1906 and is today bolstered by landscaped gardens.

Baldwin Street

Inked in the Guinness Book of records as the steepest street in the world, Baldwin Street lies in Dunedin’s North East Valley. The residential street is best appreciated in the flesh, as its gradient scale of 1:2.86 doesn’t take your breath away quite as readily as walking up it will. And yes, you can see it just fine from the bottom...

We’re only really scratching the surface here as there are so many things to see in and around Dunedin. To set up camp and see what else is on offer, take a look at the stylish Scenic Hotel Dunedin City, and the grand Scenic Hotel Southern Cross, Dunedin.
