Critical Road Closures

State Highway 6 – Haast to Wanaka Road Closures September & October 2026

Due to a large slip in early September, a section of State Highway 6 between Makarora and Lake Hawea has been intermittently closing to allow critical road works to be completed. Travel has been restricted to 3 escorted convoys both South and North during this time. Overnight and on weekends the restricted section will be open (with stop/go traffic management in place at certain times).

The restricted convoy times may impact your travel between the West Coast (Franz Josef, Fox Glacier, Haast etc) and Central Otago (Queenstown, Wanaka etc), please plan accordingly.

Weekday (8am to 5.30pm) Convoys:

Southbound (towards Wanaka) convoys leave at:

10:20am, 12:20pm, and 2:20pm

Departs from Wharf Creek.

Northbound (towards Haast) at

10am, 12pm, and 2:20pm.

Departs from the northern most Lake Wanaka Lookout.

Weekdays Overnight & Weekends

After 5.30pm on weeknights and before 8am, and on weekends (from 5.30pm Friday to 8am Monday) the road will be unrestricted and allow for free travel.
