Niue is the world’s largest raised coral atoll. Unlike most Pacific islands, it is not volcanic in origin but formed entirely from coral limestone. Ancient seismic activity uplifted the island from the sea, creating the dramatic terraces you see today.

LEGEND OF FAO AND HUANAKI

According to Niuean tradition, the gods Fao and Huanaki arrived from the mythical land of Fonuagalo. Upon their arrival, they stomped upon the reef: with the first stomp, the sea receded, revealing land; with the second, vegetation sprang forth. This legend intertwines cultural heritage with geological phenomena, reflecting the island’s unique formation.
